IT job losses in India can top 50,000 in Jan-June 2009

Bangalore, Dec 25 (PTI) Over 50,000 IT professionals in the country may lose their jobs over the next six months as the situation in the sector is expected to worsen due to the impact of global economic meltdown on the export-driven industry, a forecast by a union of IT Enabled Services warned. ".

There would be 50,000 job losses (IT and BPO put together) over the next six months," Karthik Shekhar, general secretary of UNITES India, a politically neutral union of ITES professionals told PTI. The job loss in the IT and BPO sector in the country topped 10,000 in the September-December period, Shekar said. While employees of medium-sized companies bore the brunt of job losses in the September-December period, it's going to be their counterparts in the big and small firms who would increasingly face the axe in the coming six months, he said.

UNITES India, affiliated to the global union United Network International, suggested that the companies in trouble could resort to salary and incentive cuts without trying to "squeeze" the staff, rather than adopting the "layoff path". Employees are willing to take such cuts for 12-16 months till the demand picks up again, when such benefits should be restored to them.

Shekhar said senior officials of the industry had concurred with the figure of 10,000 job loses in September-December, stating that it accounted for "bottom five per cent of the performers". Consultations with the union's counterparts in the US and UK suggested that slowdown would continue to hit the offshore sourcing space, he said.

He said factors like continued slowdown, likely "tax application" to companies outsourcing jobs under the new US regime and tightening in regard to H1B visas were among the key reasons cited for the acceleration in issue of pink slips. PTI. Source : Yahoo

Pak army dares India

New delh Dec. 23: Foreign secretary Shivshankar Menon has made a reference to a dimension of the recent terrorist attack in Mumbai which, taken to its logical conclusion, makes an appropriate Indian response inescapable. Addressing Indian ambassadors and high commissioners from around the world on the opening day of their two-day conference here on Monday, the foreign secretary noted that the terrorists had made no effort whatsoever to cover their tracks.

Sources familiar with the heads of mission conference said this indicated, according to Mr Menon, that the calculated brazenness was intended to convey the message to New Delhi that the Army was fully in control in Pakistan, and was daring India to do whatever it could.

According to the Indian reading, the Pakistan Army controls all levers of power, though there has been a visible decline, over time, in the popular esteem that it enjoys. Inviting an Indian reaction to the Mumbai assault is seen as a stratagem to rally national opinion around the armed forces.  Such a move is also said to signal that the Indians must get used to deal with the Pakistan Army once again, rather than with the notional civilian government. Ban on new Tasmac shops

Chennai Dec. 23: In a major relief to women, the chief minister M. Karunanidhi on Tuesday announced that no more new IMFL outlets would be allowed in Tamil Nadu.  Also, the liquor shops will close an hour early, at 10 instead of 11 at night, effective January one. The government action followed an appeal made by PMK leader Dr S Ramadoss who led a delegation to meet the chief minister at the secretariat on Monday to press for total prohibition in the state. Mr Karunanidhi responded by offering to bring in prohibition but in a phased manner.

An official release on Tuesday said the government had closed down over 1300 bars in addition to 128 retail outlets of TASMAC across the state over the last two years. As a precursor to bringing about total prohibition, it had now been decided not to open new IMFL outlets and also reduce the shop timing.  “Further changes being gradually introduced will be announced from time to time,” the press release added. Source : Deccan

Lost car in TN? You are lucky

New Delhi, Dec. 23: Your vehicle got stolen in Tamil Nadu? Chances are very high that you get it back, if one goes by a latest government data.  But if you are in Delhi and your vehicle got stolen, the scene is just the opposite where there are only 20 per cent chances of its recovery.  According to figures provided by National Crime Records Bureau, 86.7 per cent of the stolen vehicle last year were recovered by the Tamil Nadu police after arresting 2,558 people. Out of the 2,888 vehicles stolen in the state last year, the report said, police recovered a whopping 2,504 vehicles.

This is not the first time that Tamil Nadu earned this laurel with the state registering similar feat in 2005 and 2006.  Meanwhile, only one out of five vehicles stolen from Dehil is recovered by police, the report said noting that only 1,782 out of 8,874 vehicles stolen from the metro was recovered from the thieves.   Maharashtra has recorded the highest number of vehicle thefts last year in the country with 13,910 cases. However, only 25 per cent of the vehicles — 3,595 — were recovered. Maharashtra is followed by Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat in the list of states which have the highest number of cases of motor vehicle thefts.

Only 22 per cent of the 9,485 vehicles stolen from Uttar Pradesh were recovered last year while 26 per cent of 8,822 vehicles stolen from Madhya Pradesh were recovered, the NCRB report said. Interestingly, Chhattisgarh — had no cases of stealing of buses, trucks and tempos. Source : Deccan

No biz deal with Satyam: WB

Hyderabad Dec. 23: The World Bank has admitted that it has banned Satyam Computers from doing business with it for eight years. An official of the bank said the decision had been made on the basis of charges of data theft against the Hyderabad-based company. A spokesperson of the company, however, refused to give details, saying the company did not comment on specific clients as part of its policy.
The development adds to the miseries of Satyam, which is already fighting an investor backlash over the company’s scuppered attempt at bailing out two companies promoted by chairman Ramalinga Raju’s relatives. Reports had first surfaced in October detailing how Satyam had been implicated by the World Bank on charges of data pilferage, which were quickly denied by both the company and the bank.  Today’s admittance comes after months of “stonewalling and denying” reports about Satyam being barred from doing business with the bank till 2016, the news report says.

The decision was made in February and the ban was implemented in September. Top information security official at the bank,  Mr Robert Van Pulley was quoted by FOX News, saying the company was meted out the sanctions due to “improper benefits to bank staff” and “lack of documentation on invoices”. Source : Deccan

Citi’s India tech arm now goes to Wipro

Bengaluru Dec. 23: IT services giant Wipro has taken advantage of low market valuations to acquire the troubled Citigroup’s India technology services captive in an all-cash deal worth $127 million.  The captive, Citi Technology Services Ltd., operates out of Mumbai and Chennai while employing 2000.  Citigroup has recorded losses in the last four quarters and is under tremendous pressure to rationalise expenses, including technology costs — the financial firm reportedly employs more software developers than Microsoft! The sell of the captive unit, then, would help Citi take out some of the costs related to infrastructure management as well as application development maintenance (ADM) services provided to its affiliates across the world.

This is the second sale of a Citi captive announced in quick time to an Indian vendor — earlier, TCS announced the acquisition of Citigroup Global Services Limited, a BPO arm.
The relatively small-sized purchase, however, packs great importance for Wipro. On the business commitment front, today’s agreement provides for the delivery of at least $500 million in service revenues over the next six years from Citi. This apart, the Indian services firm acquires multiple tangible as well as intangible assets.  First, the buy gives Wipro access to Citi — an aspirational customer for any service provider. The deal gives exclusivity as well: whatever infrastructure management work Citi brings into India, Wipro would be the sole services provider.

Third, the amount of outsourcing in the infrastructure space executed by BFSI companies has been minimal thus far — security concerns and the service’s mission critical nature have been the major bottlenecks. Citi was successful in demonstrating such services can be executed from a remote location. The acquisition, thus, provides Wipro with tremendous reference value.   “The buy positions Wipro very strongly. Our ability to gain more market share as well as wallet share globally will increase with this transaction,” senior vice president with the firm Prasanna GK says.

The purchase, he adds, brings is experienced people, domain expertise required to serve a global bank, and lastly, knowledge around regulatory compliance.  Citi Technology Services in India had been working on packages around investment, retail and core banking. In infrastructure services, the unit has expertise in database, network, besides desktop administration among others.

“More importantly, the acquisition brings in the Citi context; the knowledge about their infrastructure and application environment. It goes a long way in building our capability from a pure service line perspective,” senior vice president of Finance Solutions at Wipro Soumitro Ghosh says.  Wipro’s infrastructure services business has been growing between 48 and 50 per cent CAGR over the last five years, making it one of the fastest growing units within Wipro.

It is also one of its largest practices contributing 17 per cent of the firm’s global IT services revenues. The business, including India and the Middle East, employs more than 15,000 employees currently.  The firm now believes the purchase would hasten the business' growth even further. In calendar year 2008, Citi Technology Services’ revenues are expected to be about $80 million. Source : Deccan

Chennai to get NSG hub

New Delhi Dec. 22: Hyderabad, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata have been identified as the four cities where the elite National Security Guard hubs will be established. The NSG, headquartered in the national capital, was pressed into action during the November 26 Mumbai terror strikes. The Mumbai terror attacks came as a wake-up call to the government which then decided to decentralise the force to extend similar security cover to all major cities. NSG director-general J.K. Dutt met home secretary Madhukar Gupta on Monday to discuss measures required to enhance the strength and security apparatus given to the force.

“Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Chennai are the four places that have been identified to establish the new NSG hubs. These hubs will be manned by the existing force of NSG as of now,” Mr Dutt told reporters  The strength of the force will also be enhanced, Mr Dutt said but did not specify the number of new recruitments or when it will take place. The DG also said that steps are being taken to speed up procurement of new arms and ammunition. Source : Deccan

US offers to help set up the NIA

NEW DELHI Dec. 22: A top US intelligence official on Monday met home minister P. Chidambaram and other senior Indian intelligence officials offering assistance in the setting-up of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), besides sharing critical inputs gathered by the FBI and Indian intelligence agencies during the month-long probe in the November 26 strikes.

US director of national intelligence John Michel McConnell, who flew into the city, held a half-an-hour meeting with Mr Chidambaram in North Block on Monday morning. US ambassador David C. Mulford was also present in the meeting. Mr McConnell is later believed to have met National Security Advisor M.K. Narayanan and India’s intelligence chiefs to discuss the evidence gathered in the Mumbai attack probe. Though there was no official word about the FBI team’s return to the US, a senior home ministry official said that the month-long probe into the Mumbai attacks in nearing its final stage. Officers from the FBI have been camping in Mumbai for almost one month and have already questioned Ajmal Amir Kasab to ascertain his identity as a Pakistan citizen and those of his handlers in Pakistan. Source : Deccan

Maya mania in state

Chennai Dec. 22: Dravidian political stalwarts of Tamil Nadu may have got a jolt seeing the ‘Blue Elephant’ of the BSP all over Chennai, on thousands of fluttering party flags and on posters that welcomed Behenji Mayawati, the UP chief minister.  With several minor politicians and a few noted bureaucrats lining up to join her bid to capture some southern turf, it appeared that the Tamil capital was in a spell of ‘Maya mania’ on Monday.

Though her Hindi was hard to sell among the pre-dominantly dalit audience at the brotherhood confe-rence she came to address, the self-proclaimed champion of the downtrodden drew applause repeatedly from her audience, who appreciated her inimitable style of pitching her rhe-toric — inclusion of upper castes among the Dalit masses. “BSP is not a caste based party meant for a particular community,” she declared.

In fact, her successful integration of brahmins and dalits dubbed as “social engineering’’ proved a minor hit in Tamil Nadu even at the onset as former AIADMK MP and a brahmin, Sreedh-aran, along with former DGP and dalit Kalimuthu joined the party in the same podium, apparently, setting the tone for Mayawati’s trip down south. Unlike last December’s maiden conference, Mayawati made waves this time in the company of senior bureaucrats and seasoned Tamil politicians who were suffering estranged ties with their party high commands. Source : Deccan

AP: School meals sicken 1,800

New Delhi, Dec. 22: The government on Monday admitted that 4,620 children had fallen ill after eating mid-day-meals in the last few years, contrary to the claims that children were getting hot and hygienic food under the scheme. Among the states, Andhra Pradesh has suffered the most where 1,839 students of primary level had fallen ill followed by Karnataka (1,241 students had fallen ill), minister of state for human resource development M.A.A. Fatmi informed the Rajya Sabha. Besides the above two states, 612 students in Uttar Pradesh, 208 in Maharashtra, 267 in Rajasthan, 145 in West Bengal, 77 in Tamil Nadu and 85 in Orissa have fallen ill after taking mid-day meals.

The national capital too has reported four such students falling ill due to the school food. Bihar and the Andamans have reported one case each of this nature. The government aims at providing cooked food to students in the primary level to retain and attract students, thus reducing the dropout rate.   The other aim is to provide thousands of needy students required calories in school so that their growth does not get hampered.

“As and when any complaint was brought to the notice of the government, the concerned state government and Union Territories’ administration was asked to conduct suitable enquiry and to take appropriate action against the responsible person(s) and initiate corrective measures to avoid recurrence of such incidents in future,” Fatmi said. The minister, however, did not mention what kind of action had been taken against the culprits or what type of illnesses these students suffered from due to the bad quality food intake.

The HRD ministry too informed the upper house that India has entered into an agreement with the World Bank for assistance worth Rs 24 billion for the period 2007-10 as partial funding towards unversalisation of education known as the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) programme. Source : Deccan

8 cases against TV9 channel

Bengaluru Dec. 22: The city police booked eight cases against Kannada news channel, TV 9, for allegedly spreading a rumour that some children fell ill after being administered the pulse polio vaccine on Sunday.  Cases were also booked against people who indulged in vandalism in and around the hospitals on Sunday night. Chief medical officer and the doctor on duty at Bowring hospital have lodged complaints with the Bowring hospital police outpost. In his complaint, Dr Radhakrishna has stated that a mob misbehaved with duty doctors and hurled stones at windowpanes.

In a suo motu action, the city police registered separate cases in Hennur, Bharatinagar, Shivajinagar, K.R. Puram, Banashankari and Victoria hospital police outposts against the TV channel for sparking rumours leading to vandalism.  Police said people panicked after the channel aired the news that a few children fell ill after taking the polio vaccine. Two cases were filed in Bharatinagar station itself. It said panic-stricken parents were not in a position to listen to advice from police officers. People reportedly said that a channel had aired news about the ill effects of the vaccination drive. Source : Deccan

Centre may cut fuel prices

New Delhi, Dec. 22: The government may further reduce petrol, diesel and domestic LPG prices just before the General Elections are announced in February, a senior official said.  “To my mind, the government will wait till February before making another round of price cuts,” a senior petroleum ministry official said.  Earlier this month, the government reduced petrol price by Rs 5 a litre and diesel by Rs 2 per litre as international crude oil prices dipped from an all-time high of $147 a barrel in July to under $ 45 a barrel.

“This period (till February) will be used to monitor the movements in international prices. There is no point in cutting fuel prices just now and then having to raise it again if oil makes a retreat,” the official said.  Even after this month price cut, public sector oil firms were making a profit of Rs 9.98 on the sale of every litre of petrol and Rs 1.03 per litre on diesel.

The further softening in global oil prices has seen these profits widen to Rs 11.48 per litre on petrol and Rs 2.92 a litre on diesel, he said.  Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum are together projected to lose Rs 1,10,381 crore in revenues this fiscal on fuel sales, the official said, adding the oil firms can use the period till the next price cut to make up part of the losses they have incurred on fuel sales this fiscal. Source : Deccan

Tata to inject ‘tens of millions’ into JLR

London Dec. 22: While, the Labour government, led by the Prime Minister Gordon Brown planned to bail out Tata Motors-owned Jaguar Land Rover within days, the Tatas have managed to secure enough cash to postpone the bailout until after Christmas. Meanwhile, the planned government bailout, which was described by The Times newspaper as worth tens of millions of pounds, would have helped keep the luxury carmaker stay afloat.

The imminent bailout also has helped the Tata Group to secure last-minute funding to prevent a cash flow crisis. The UK government will negotiate a loan package, worth hundreds of millions of pounds, with JLR and the government officials were working out the details of the package over the weekend. Mr Brown and  the chancellor of exchequer Alistair Darling have already privately agreed that short-term assistance for JLR was almost certainly necessary, the report said.

However, the Tata Group found the cash for JLR because its banks were convinced that the UK government would prevent a collapse, the report quoted a source as saying.
Tata Motors has agreed to inject “tens of millions” of pounds into Jaguar Land Rover to prevent an immediate cash flow crisis, according to the Financial Times. The Tata Group, which bought the luxury carmaker earlier this year for $2.3 billion from Ford Motor, has already provided “hundreds of millions” of working capital to the British firm, the report said. The UK government has publicly been lukewarm to the idea of a bailout for the carmaker, which directly employs 15,000 people in UK. The business secretary Lord Peter Mandelson said on Sunday that the Indian owners of Jaguar Land Rover must “look to their own resources”.  On Friday, Mr Brown had confirmed the stance taken by his ministers—Lord Mandelson and Mr Alastair Darling — and made it clear that this government had made “no promise of support” for Jaguar Land Rover. Source : Deccan

Shampoos no cure for dandruff: Scientists

Chennai Dec. 22: Scientists have pooh-poohed advertised claims that shampoos, most of them endorsed by celebrities, could get rid of dandruff.  Insisting that dandruff is not curable, they cite a Chennai study involving 250 persons, selected randomly, to say that men are more vulnerable to the disease.  “Our study has found that people with O and AB blood groups are more susceptible to dandruff though people with other blood groups are not free from it,” said Dr S.  Gokul Shankar, who led the team of researchers.

“Also, people in the 16-45 age group are more prone to dandruff. We also found that dandruff is more common in males than females,” said Dr Shankar.     Shampoos are no solution to dandruff, said Dr Ranjith Mehenderkar, School of Medicine, AIMST University, Malaysia.   “So long as you use a shampoo, dandruff will be under control. But the moment you discontinue it, dandruff returns with more vigour,” said Dr Mehenderkar, another member of the research team.

Prof Jaykar Thomas, former head of the dermatology, department of Thanjavur Medical College, said that some of the findings of the Chennai team would be of big use to dermatologists.   “The findings on blood groups are interesting and they have to be studied in detail,” said Dr Thomas.    According to Dr Shankar, advanced research is needed to find out why only certain individuals are affected.   “The million dollar question is why Pityrosporum Ovale, the dandruff causing organism grows out of control in certain individuals,” he said. Prof AJA Ranjith Singh, who supervised the research, said testosterone could be the reason for males getting more dandruff than females. Source : Deccan

Bullet proof cars for CM

Hyderabad Dec. 21: The Tamil Nadu chief minister, Mr M. Karunanidhi, will get two bullet-proof cars that are being fabricated at Hyder- abad. The Ambassador cars that he currently uses will be replaced by Tata Safari SUVs which are being bullet-proofed by a private firm in Hyderabad. Sources said that the Tamil Nadu government had opted for an upgrade as the Ambassador cars were found to be “inconvenient”.

“It takes 70 days to bullet-proof a vehicle,” an official said. “They are built according to the standards of the Bureau of Police Research.” The car can withstand fire from revolvers and automatic weapons. The tyres can also withstand firing. The Medak Ordnance Factory bullet-proofs vehicles but it is loaded to capacity and the government and private citizens are looking to private firms for the job. The police also buys some bullet-proofed vehicles directly from automobile firms. Earlier, the Andhra Pradesh former chief minister, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, has bullet-proofed his Tata Safari on his own at Real Cars, which is also doing up Mr Karunanidhi’s vehicles.

AP has the largest number of bullet-proofed cars after Jammu and Kashmir; the Police Transport Organisa- tion has around 200 such cars for the chief minister and other VIPs. The demand for reinforced cars has increased after the Mumbai attacks. An IG rank police officer said that the government plans to buy up to six Tata Sumos or Safaris and get them bullet-proofed. Taj, Trident open their doors

Mumbai Dec. 21: The Trident, Nariman Point and the Taj Mahal Hotel’s Tower wing at Apollo Bunder both resumed partial services on Sunday, but with markedly different approaches. While the Trident management seemed keen to stress a feeling a normalcy by welcoming any guests who wished to visit the site of the 26/11 attacks, the Taj’s “inauguration” was a high-profile do for select invitees only.

The newly-renovated lobby of the Trident was buzzing with activity as guests were let in on Sunday morning. The now-routine baggage and body check was in place, with added security officials present as well.   Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan and the deputy chief minister Chaggan Bhujbal also attended this meeting. Source : Deccan

Rajini loved cart rides, says uncle

Chennai Dec. 21: Nachikuppam, a sleepy village 25 km from Krishnagiri, bordering Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, was unknown till Karthikeyan, an ardent fan asked ‘superstar’ Rajinikanth if he would construct a memorial for his father Ramoji Rao and mother Ram Bai in the village. After Rajinikanth promised Karthikeyan during an interaction with his fans last month that he would consider erecting a memorial for his parents at Nachikuppam, the village was buzzing with the media in search of stories.

A media shy T. Saraswathi Bai, widow of late Thukkaram Rao who was the maternal uncle of Rajinikanth, shifted to Bengaluru. Now she has returned to Nachikuppam and lives in a small tiled house, where Rajinikanth stays during his visits to the village.

“Lack of opportunities to earn a livelihood in Nachikuppam forced Rajini’s father to shift to Bangalore to work as a policeman.” said Saraswathi Bai recalling the past. Rajini, the third male child in the family, used to visit the village with his family often and would spend time with her and her husband Thukkaram Rao, whom Rajini loved a lot, she said. According to Saraswathi Bai, the superstar was mischievous during his childhood and would often pester people to take him for a ride in a bullock cart. Source : Deccan

60 Lankan troops killed, claims rebel web

Colombo Dec. 21: Tamil Tiger rebels killed 60 Sri Lankan troops advancing toward their de facto capital, a pro-rebel report said, but the government denied on Sunday that many soldiers had died.  Meanwhile, the government said that its troops captured the strategic village of Nedunkerni in the northeast on Sunday. Clashes have intensified in recent weeks as the military continues a major push to capture the rebel headquarters and fulfil a promise to end the 25-year civil war.

The insurgents struck on Saturday as the soldiers were preparing an assault in Iranamadu village, just south of the militant headquarters of Kilinochchi, and forced the troops to retreat from recently seized territory, the rebel-affiliated TamilNet website reported. The militants recovered 12 bodies of Sri Lankan soldiers, and 150 other troops were wounded, the report said. It did not provide the number of rebel losses. Military spokesman Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara said there were a “few” deaths and some soldiers were reported missing. But he dismissed the casualty figures reported by TamilNet and said soldiers were not in retreat. “We have not pulled back. We are in the same locations,” Brig. Nanayakkara said.

It was not possible to verify the rebel report because journalists are not allowed in the war zone. Both sides are known to exaggerate enemy casualties and underreport their own losses. Soldiers trying to capture the rebels’ northeastern stronghold seized Nedunkerni town, a key crossroads that connected three of the rebels’ main supply routes, Brig. Nanayakkara said.

He said soldiers inflicted “damages” to the rebels but did not give details. Government forces have seized a large area of rebel-held territory in recent months and forced the Tigers into territory in the northeast. However, troops have been locked in heavy battles at the edge of Kilinochchi for nearly two months amid heavy monsoon rains and stiff resistance by the rebels. The militants have claimed at least three major battle successes in recent weeks, the last being the reported killing of 170 soldiers near Kilinochchi on Tuesday. Source : Deccan

Sonia, Shah Rukh in list

New York Dec. 21: Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan have been ranked among the 50 most powerful people in the world by the prestigious US-based magazine Newsweek in a list topped by President-elect Barack Obama.  Pakistan Army chief Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, who controls the the country’s nuclear weapons, is placed 20th on the list of the global “power elite” at the beginning of 2009 in the magazine’s January issue.

Obama, who scripted history by becoming the first Black-American to be voted to the White House, is followed by Chinese President Hu Jintao, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, German Chancellor Angela Markel and powerful Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. A surprise inclusion in the list, which the magazine admits is subjective, is Osama bin Laden, whom the Newsweek describes as “global terrorist.” North Korean dictator Kim Jong II also finds a place in the list. Placing Sonia Gandhi at 17th spot, the magazine says though Indian political scene is riven by factions, the Congress remains the strongest national force and rules unchallenged. “In the world’s largest democracy, she is the queen.”  The magazine describes Shah Rukh Khan, who occupies 41st spot, as the “King of Bollywood”. Source : Deccan

Jackson ‘close to death’

London, Dec. 21: Pop legend Michael Jackson is suffering from a rare lung condition and is “close to death”, a British newspaper has claimed.  Jackson needs to undergo an emergency transplant operation but he is too weak to be rushed into surgery and may even be fighting for his life, the Sunday Express quoted Ian Halperin, who is penning a biography on the singer, as saying. According to Halperin, 50-year-old Jackson has been diagnosed with Alpha 1-antitrypsin deficiency, a genetic condition that can be fatal in severe cases, and the singer is now so ill he can barely speak and has lost as much as 95 per cent of the vision in his left eye. He needs a lung transplant.

“He also has emphysema and chronic gastrointestinal bleeding which is not stopping and could kill him,” Halperin said. He has also claimed that Jackson’s lung conditions — which affects only one in 5,000 Americans — has been difficult to treat due to its associated health problems. “For years, Michael has been working with his own doctors to try to make sure it doesn’t progress. He has been on many medications that have stabilised him,” he was quoted by the British newspaper as saying.  Source : Deccan

All nationalities welcome at Trident: Keswani

Mumbai (PTI): Trident Hotel, which reopens on Sunday less than a month after suffering terror attack, on Saturday said nationals of all countries were welcome as its guests and there was no instruction from the Indian government to disallow Pakistanis as guests in the luxury establishment.

"Guests of all nationalities are welcome at our hotels. We would only follow notifications issued by the government of India. We have not received a notification from the government regarding Pakistani nationals," Trident President Rattan Keswani said in a statement.

"There are some reports in the media that Pakistani nationals are not allowed at hotels. We have not received a notification to that effect from the government of India," he said.

Oberoi-Trident were among the places that witnessed the brunt of the terror attack on November 26, which killed over 170 people.

Keswani's clarification came after there was some confusion about his utterances in Hindi during a press conference earlier in the day to a question on allowing Pakistani nationals. Source : The Hindu.

Cable cut disrupts net services

New Delhi: India is among the countries that have been hit by the undersea cable damage that occurred in the Mediterranean, disrupting Internet and communication links between Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Even as large Indian BPOs moved traffic to back-up routes and circuits, smaller call centres that rely on Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) were hit the most.

S.V. Ramana, president, Other Service Providers Association of India (OSPAI), said the larger BPO which used IPLC and MPLS continue to run smoothly. “However, BPOs which are serving the U.K. market in a big way may have been hit, as only half of the cable system is currently in use on the Atlantic route. Also, smaller companies which use the Internet as core network connectivity for serving clients are likely to see congestion, and higher latency.” BPO major Genpact said there was no disruption in its operations or services due to diversity in cable routes and service providers that are built into its network, its technology framework and redundancy.

Quatrro founder Raman Roy too said his company’s network had enough redundancies, and was able to reroute traffic, immediately.

“The SMW4 carries a lot of Internet and voice traffic from India. We also have circuits on SMW4, but we were not impacted as we have a comprehensive disaster recovery and business continuity policy. We have redundancy on both the trans-Atlantic and also the trans-Pacific routes, and so there was no impact on our customers,” Ranjit Narasimhan, president and CEO of HCL BPO, said. Source : The Hindu.

The Taj and the Trident reopen today

Back on their feet less than a month after the terror attacks

Sprucing up: Taj Mahal Hotel staff decorate a Christmas tree in the lobby on Saturday, the eve of the hotel’s reopening.
Mumbai: Terror-torn luxury hotels — The Taj Mahal Palace and Tower and the Trident — will reopen their doors on Sunday after a gap of less than a month.

At a press conference here on Saturday, Rattan Keswani, president, Oberoi Hotels and Resorts, told the media that the Trident would have 100 rooms occupied on the reopening day and its restaurants — India Jones, Frangipani, Opium Den and the Verandah — already received reservations calls.

In the wake of the attacks, the hotel sought expert help in upgrading security. “We have hired the best security consultant,” Mr. Keswani said.

Although he did not divulge the extent of spending on security upgrade, he said it was quite a lot. He spoke of the likelihood of the presence of armed guards and barricades at the entrances.

“The hotel will have large baggage scanners. Every piece of hand baggage will be checked, metal detectors will be in place at every entrance and there will be an identity check. However, these surveillance and security measures will be as “unobtrusive as possible,” he said.

The restoration of the Trident cost the Oberoi group, which manages the Oberoi and Trident hotels, about Rs. 40 to Rs. 50 lakh.

Of the two, the Oberoi suffered heavy damage and will reopen only after an estimated time of seven months. No decision on its reopening has been taken so far. The assessment process is likely to get over in 15 days, said Mr. Keswani. The restoration of the Oberoi will cost Rs. 40 crore to Rs. 50 crore. The insurance company, New India Assurance, already released Rs. 25 crore, he said.

Now the Trident’s lobby, the main affected area, sparkles — its unblemished look healing the discomfiting memory of the horror. Twenty-two guests and 10 staff lost their lives at the Trident and Oberoi, said Mr. Keswani.

According to Mr. Devendra Bharma, Executive Vice-President, during the attack, 135 guests were evacuated from the Oberoi and 316 guests were evacuated from the Trident. Guests dining at the restaurants were also evacuated.

He also said the hotel saw cancellations up to 30 to 35 per cent. However, this was true not just of this hotel, but in hotels all over the country. Moreover, this being the holiday season, the number of foreign guests is anyway low.

According to a Taj press note dated December 17, “268 rooms will be available, which include nine suites and six club rooms. The evening of December 21 will also see The Taj Mahal Palace and Tower reopening its world-renowned restaurants and eateries on the dot at 7.30 p.m., including The Zodiac Grill, Souk, Masala Kraft, Aquarius, Shamiana, Starboard and La Patisserie. Also reopening will be the Rooftop Rendezvous Banquet Hall and the Chambers.”

Both the Taj and the Oberoi have set up funds to help those affected by the attacks — the Taj Public Service Welfare Trust and the Oberoi Care Fund. Source : The Hindu.

Goa beach parties banned

Panaji Dec. 20: Security concerns have prompted the Goa government to announce a ban on beach parties over the Christmas-New Year week from December 23 to January 5. After a high-level meeting to assess the situation, the administration decided to go ahead with the ban after some initial confusion. It is expected to hit trendy beachside nightclubs the most. Several of these draw huge crowds that spill over onto sand decks. “It is impossible to provide security to such large numbers of people,” said Goa home minister Ravi Naik. Year-end festivities mark peak tourism season in Goa.

The ban though will not affect festivities in hotels, restaurants, indoor clubs and traditional open-air dances, the administration clarified. Permissions for these are being granted to those who can meet security requirements — metal detectors at entry and exit points, and other precautions.  The administration has been insisting on stricter compliance with the 10 pm noise pollution deadline for open-air music. Source : Deccan.

Consult docs from other cities with phone cards

Dec. 20: Sample this.   “Hello, doctor-saar? I think I have heart trouble. Or is it gas? Can you help me?”

“Sure, have you recharged your ‘Oxigen’ card? This might take some time,” replies the doctor, on the other side of the phone line.

A doctor’s consultation over a call from your mobile phone is the latest technological short-cut on offer, as the world’s first ‘pre-paid calling card’ was introduced to the city, by Delhi-based ‘Oxigen Private Ltd’ on Saturday.   “On registering with Oxigen, a virtual ‘oxicash wallet’ is created. The ‘wallet’ needs to be recharged, and then, patients can call any doctor registered with Oxigen for a paid consultation,” explains Sunil Kulkarni, group president.

Patients with enough ‘balance’ on their oxicash cards will first choose a doctor, using a code number that ensures that both their mobile numbers stay confidential. When the doctor accepts the call, the consultation begins, and the caller (patient) is charged by the minute, according to rates fixed between the doctor and ‘Oxigen’.

“This service is best suited for post surgery or post-hospitalisation follow-ups. Those who want to consult doctors in different cities will also benefit,” Kulkarni added.  Patients with psychiatric problems, or those who are embarrassed to be seen outside a venerologist’s clinic are also potential clients. While the company is still signing up doctors for its unique service, it remains to be seen if such ‘indirect’ consultations will score over a conventional, face to face interaction with the practitioner. Source : Deccan.

Woman held with 1 kg gold

Chennai Dec. 20: Airport customs on Saturday arrested a Sri Lankan woman for allegedly smuggling about a kilo of gold.  The accused had wrapped gold wires around her arms while wearing a full sleeve shirt to avoid detection, officials said. Hairoos Lalitha (35) had arrived from Colombo by the Jet Airways flight and was on her way out the customs officials stopped her on suspicion. “The woman was wearing a salwar kameez with an unusually long sleeve. As travelers from Sri Lanka do not usually wear such a dress, we grew suspicious and our women officers checked her,” a customs officer said.

He said it was found that Lalitha had wound 24-ct gold wires around both her arms all the way up to the armpits. “We have seized the gold, weighing about 987 gms and valued at Rs 14 lakh. The woman has been remanded to custody,” the officer said. Source : Deccan.

Bank to stand by biz titans

Mumbai, Dec. 19: The ICICI Bank board in a major announc-ement said that Ms Chanda Kochhar will take over as the managing director and CEO of ICICI Bank on May 1, 2009 when Mr K.V. Kamath’s term ends on April 30, 2009.

Mr Kamath will replace Mr N. Vaghul as non-exe-utive chairman of the bank. The appointment of

Ms Kochhar at 47, to head the bank follows a tradition where Mr Kamath, and be-fore that Mr Vaghul headed the bank in their late-40s. Ms Kochhar’s appointment as managing director and chief executive will be till March 31, 2014.

A combative and suave

Ms Kochhar answering que-stions at a press conference where the announcement was made said that she had no regrets heading the bank in this tough environment. She said: "It is a challenge, not a scare." And it requires "different steps in a volatile situation. Leadership capabilities are best tested in challenging situations and I am happy to take the mantle at this time".

She said the "interest rate cycle is declining and correcting, and as rates soften, it will become a catalyst for restarting economic activity. This means more opportunities for the banking sector. "

Ms Kochhar said the bank stand by the corporate houses. "The corporates have piled up the inventories with the high input costs. Now the input costs have come down creating a need for winding up those inventories. In this challenging period, banks need to support them. When they come out of the situation, they will be able to adjust. It will also help to keep the non-performing assets (NPAs) under control," she said.

Ms Kochhar said: "The interest rate cycle is indicating a clear downward trend, which is evident in the last couple of weeks."

She added, "The government bonds, corp-orate bonds and bulk deposit rates have come down by about two per cent in last couple of weeks. Lending rates also are also coming down. But as the overall cost of fund is high, the bench prime lending rate (BPLR) will not be eased immediately," she said.

The growth in the overall loan disbursement in this fiscal will be in the range of five to 10 per cent against double-digit growth in the past few years, she added.

While speaking about the disbursement of the retail loans, she said: "The decision is being taken according to the lending parameters and credit quality. We have stopped disbursing personal loans and are making efforts to keep defaults in case of credit cards within limit. The share of personal loan and credit-card lending in overall lending portfolio is very small," she said.  Source : Deccan.

Oil price falls to $34/bbl despite Opec output cut

London. Dec. 19: Oil fell below $34 on Friday to its lowest level in more than 4-1/2 years as the global economic slowdown overshadowed Opec’s record supply cuts. US light crude for January delivery fell $2.64 to $33.58 a barrel. London Brent crude was trading 18 cents up at $43.54. Oil prices have fallen by more than $110 from their peak above $147 in July. They look set for their second biggest weekly decline since 2003.

"Until traders see a sustained drop-off in the rate of demand destruction, the market will have a hard time establishing a floor," Mr Jonathan Kornafel, Asia Director of Hudson Capital Energy, said.

"From a credibility standpoint, Opec has no choice but to bite the bullet for the next few months."

Oil has continued to drop despite pledges by the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec) this week to remove 2.2 million barrels per day from its supply, which will be the largest ever reduction by the producer group.

Opec kingpin Saudi Arabia’s oil minister, Mr Ali al-Naimi, speaking in London, said on Friday the kingdom would be pumping less oil in January and would be at its new output target in line with the group’s latest cut.

Other key markets were also falling on Friday. The dollar looked set for its biggest weekly decline since 1985 and world stocks fell as concerns about the US economy worried investors in the last full trading week of 2008.

Because of the worldwide credit squeeze, many analysts expect a drop in oil use this year.

Some doubt Opec, whose third production cut since September has brought its total reduction to over four million bpd or five per cent of world supply, will fully implement the agreed cuts, further weighing on prices.  Source : Deccan.

RIL: Working on three important projects

Mumbai, Dec. 19: While not denying categorically that it had put its investments, expansion and new investments on hold, the Reliance Industries Limited group on Friday said that it was currently involved in three projects: the second refinery at Jamnagar, the gas production in the KG Basin and the East West Gas Pipeline.

Some media reports mentioned that RIL put on hold new investments and expansions and had also put its semiconductor business on the back burner.

On the semi-conductor business the spokesperson said: "As a part of our business expansion, we continue to evaluate various long term potential business opportunities. As a matter of policy we do not comment on any business which is still in the evaluation stage."

The group also denied that it was retrenching staff.

It said: "As a good corporate practice, we constantly examine our cost competitiveness and take appropriate measures regularly. The group had written to the director general of hydro carbons regarding the problems that it faced after the terrorist attacks on Mumbai."

Asked about this the RIL spokesperson said: "We are working with our various international consultants to mitigate the impact of the recent terror attacks in the country. We had announced that the gas production is expected in the first quarter of 2009. All efforts are being made to ensure the start of production in this time frame."  Source : Deccan.

Titanium project in TN in limbo

Chennai, Dec 19: The future of Tata Steel’s proposed titanium project in Tamil Nadu with an investment of Rs 2,500 crore is in trouble. "It’s (the project) in limbo. It’s now up to the state government to act," said Mr B. Muthuraman, managing director of Tata Steel.

Tata Steel had signed a MoU with the state government for setting up titanium dioxide project in Tuticorin district of Tamil in 2007. The project consists of mining, mineral separation and value addition to titanium dioxide pigment. It requires about 10,000 acres land expected to generate employment for 10,000 people. The company had already acquired 300 acres land for the project.

Then some political outfits objected the land acquisition demanding higher price for the land. With the Tata’s new stand indicating that the state government has to solve the land acquisition issue, the project will be further delayed.  He said the steel price would remain at the present level or it might go up marginally.  Source : Deccan.

Slow Computer? Speed Up Your PC By Disabling Unnecessary Windows Services

Computer too slow?

If you have not had yet the experience of working on a PC that moves like a snail, you are a unique, rare human being

Windows PCs have had a long tradition of not managing well long and uninterrupted use across different applications, too many applications when installed and removed from a PC and a slew of processes and services running at all times inside your PC RAM memory but which maybe actually completely unneeded by your computer.

Your computer is indeed filled with hidden functions and services whose existence you may barely know. Most of the times, such a large number of unnecessary background programs is likely to slow down your computer to a crawl without any valid reason or necessity to do so
Unneeded Windows services that you can turn off :

  • AdobeLM Service : Not all computers have this service, still it is useless, just disable it if you have it.
  • Alerter : Disable this one if you are not on a network because you will not receive alerts.
  • Application Management : Set this to manual.
  • Automatic Updates : Disable it if you don't require auto updating and patching of Windows. It is pretty useless if you use auto-patcher by NeoWin to update your Windows OS. Thus, you will save bandwidth.
  • ClipBook : Disable this if you are not on a network, since you don't need to share anything...
  • Computer Browser : Disable this too if you are not on a network, as you don't need to browse and monitor connected computers.
  • Cryptographic Services : Set this to manual if you are not sure you need it.
  • Distributed Transaction Service : Set this to manual.
  • DNS Client : Set this to manual if you are not on a network.
  • Error Reporting Service : Disable this useless service for reporting errors to Microsoft, because they will hardly even reply to you for any error you get. Also saves lots of bandwidth.
  • Fast User Switching Compatibility : Disable it if you have only a single user on your computer, or if you do not use fast user switching feature much. That is, if you completely log-off and then allow other users to use your computer, then you do not need this. Note that this service is completely useless for low memory computers.
  • FTP Publishing : Disable this if you do not use FTP.
  • Help and Support : Set it to manual or turn it off if you do not use the help feature often... You can turn it on again when you want help.
  • HTTP SSL : Set it to manual.
  • Human Interface Device Access : Turn it off if you do not use hot-keys or remote systems on your computer; if you use them sometimes, it is better turn it to manual.
  • IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service : Set this to manual to save memory and time. Do not turn it off if you have a CD writer or a DVD writer attached to your computer.
  • Indexing Service : Turn it off, it uses lots of CPU. If you are an avid searcher, like a maniac, on your computer, leave it on since it will help you. If you know where your files are and do not use search that often, then disable it for your good.
  • InstallDriver Table Manager : Disable it, it does no harm in doing so.
  • IPSEC Services : Set this to manual.
  • Windows Messenger : Disable this if you are not on a network, it uses too much memory and it is a hog. Also, it does no good and sometimes it is likely to become a security threat.
  • MS Software Shadow Copy Provider : Set this to manual.
  • Net Logon : Disable if you are not on a network.
  • NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing : Disable this if you do not use Remote Desktop feature; in my opinion, it is a pretty useless feature.
  • Network Provisioning Service : Disable this, iti s useless if you are not on a network.
  • NT LM Security Support Provider : Disable this, its useless too.
  • NVIDIA Display Driver Service : If you do not use the features of nVidia Desktop, this service must be disabled; it is a big hog of memory.
  • Office Source Engine : Disable it if you have a MS Office CD handy always, its helpful if your installation goes corrupt.
  • Portable Media Serial Number Service : Set it to manual if you connect portable media to your computer, otherwise disable it.
  • Print Spooler : Disable it if you don't have a printer.
  • Protected Storage : Disable it if you don't allow strangers to sit on your encrypted storage computer.
  • Remote Desktop Help Session Manager : Disable it if you don't use Remote Desktop feature for help and support from Microsoft which most probably is a "Yes".
  • Remote Procedure Call Locator : Set it to manual.
  • Remote Registry : Serious security threat if turned on, disable it no matter what.
  • Removable Storage : Disable it if you don't use removable storage drives, else turn it manual.
  • Routing and Remote Access : Set it to manual.
  • Secondary Logon : Useless feature for most, disable it or turn it manual.
  • Security Accounts Manager : Disable it, it's pretty useless, unless you use NTFS Encryption.. .
  • Security Center : Damn useless and irritating feature. Disable it.
  • Server : Set it to manual or disable it if you are not on network.
  • Smart Card : Disable it if you don't use smart cards on your computer.
  • SSDP Discovery Service : Disable it of not on network or don't have UPnP devices on home networks.
  • Task Scheduler : Disable it if you don't schedule tasks like defragmentation, error scans etc...¦ and plan to do it your self instead.
  • TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper : Set it to manual if on network, otherwise disable it.
  • Telnet : Set it to manual if you use this feature, otherwise disable it, especially if you are home users.
  • Terminal Services : Since you aren't using Remote Desktop etc...¦ disable it for good.
  • Uninterrupted Power Supply : Disable it if you don't have an UPS attached to the serial port of your computer.
  • Universal Plug and Play Device Host : Set it to manual.
  • User Privilege Service : Set it to manual.
  • Volume Shadow Copy : Disable it if you don't backup using System Restore or Windows Backup.
  • Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) : Disable this if you have another firewall such as Norton or Zone Alarm installed, otherwise let it remain ON for better security.
  • Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) : If you don't connect/use a camera/scanner with your computer, disable this service, else set it to manual.
  • Windows Media Connect : Disable this if you don't use things such as an iPod etc... for your Windows Media Player.
  • Windows Media Connect (WMC) Helper : Disable this if you disabled the one above or if you don't need help.
  • Windows Time : Disable if not on a synchronized network.
  • Wireless Zero Configuration : Disable if not on a wireless network.
  • WMI Performance Adapters : Disable it, useless service for basic usage.
  • Workstation: Disable if you aren't on a network. Or simply, if you are a gamer, just shut this one.
Notes:
  1. To enter service manager, go to Start > Run > Type services.msc and hit enter.
  2. To toggle the startup type of a service between Automatic, Manual and Disabled, double-click on the required service and choose the specific option from the listbox titled 'Startup Type' in the General tab.
  3. If you are unsure about a service or for some reason, think it's important, leave it alone or turn it to manual instead of disabling. It will help protect from damage.
  4. Completely mastering service management is a task possible only by trial and error.
  5. There are risks involved in turning down important services, better read the description before attempting to change a service's startup type.

But the company rejected the same on the ground that he was not eligible for the accident claim and it was not responsible for the promise given by the agent.

Contending that the terms and conditions were printed in English language and hence he trusted the agent, he sent a representation to the company to reimburse his medical expenses and to print the terms and conditions in Tamil in future. Subsequen-tly, he moved the high court, which also directed the company to consider his representation. But the company again rejected his claim, he added.

‘Pay retirement benefits’

Chennai: The Madras high court has held that those who resign because of illness or ill-health and not because of any misconduct or adverse record and are allowed to do so by the state, are entitled for all retirement benefits.

A division bench comprising acting Chief Justice S.J. Mukhopadhaya and Justice V. Dhanapalan while disposing of a petition from D Vijayarangan, directed the state government to provide retirement benefits including pension and gratuity to him.

Viajayarangan while in service in government department suffered mental illness and went on long medical leave. Since the leave exceeded more than one year, he was served with a notice. In this background, he had to resign from service, but on recovering from illness, he requested for reinstatement, which was rejected. In the meantime, he applied for retirement but such application was also rejected.

The bench said under Rule 23 of the Tamil Nadu Pension Rules, a person was entitled for all benefits if he was allowed to resign for appointment in some other post under the government. The rule was silent with regard to resignation, if given on the grounds of illness or ill-health for which permission was granted by the competent authority. Hence, "we hold that those who resign because of illness or ill-health are entitled for the same benefit which was allowed to those who resign to join another service under the state." Source : Deccan

Chennai, Dec. 19: The election commission on Friday banned distribution of the bag containing ingredients for preparing sweet pongal, saris and dhotis in Madurai district citing the model code of conduct, which is in force for January 9 be-election to Tirumangalam Assembly constituency.

Addressing a press conference at the secretariat here, chief electoral officer Naresh Gupta said the model code of conduct would apply for the entire district of Madurai. "Even during the previous elections in the state the commission had banned the distribution of saris and dhotis," he said, adding that technically, it would be in force till January 15 though the counting of votes for the by-election is on January 12.

Only on Tuesday, the state government had announced distribution of the bag containing ingredients such as rice, jaggery, split green gram, cashew, raisins and cardamom for preparing sweet pongal to celebrate Pongal festival and Tamil New Year day for the 1.86 crore family card holders.

Mr Gupta said the AIADMK candidate who filed his nomination on Thursday violated the model code of conduct. As per the code, only five people, including the candidate, should enter the returning officer’s office while filing nomination papers. But when the AIADMK candidate filed his papers more number of persons accompanied him in violation of the rules, he said, adding that it was a failure on the part of police to enforce the code. "We will submit a report to the election commission along with video cassettes," he said.

The CEO refused to comment to a question on chief minister M. Karunanidhi’s charge that the state government had not been consulted by the election commission before the announcement of by-election. Source : Deccan

Macro drain project gets Rs 360 crore

Chennai, Dec. 19: The Union government on Friday sanctioned Rs 360 crore as the first installment for the prestigious Chennai macro drain project to make the city free of post-monsoon water-logging.

"A high-level delegation comprising civic officials will camp in Delhi for the next few days to ensure that the next three instalments of the Rs 1,538 crore project are sanctioned within two months," Chennai mayor M. Subramanian who is heading the delegation told Deccan Chronicle over the phone.

The public works department (PWD) and Chennai corporation (CC) will jointly execute the pilot project funded under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.

The project report for the first phase is ready. Under this phase, Otteri Nullah will be linked to Cooum river through a channel and this move will prevent flooding in Perambur, Otteri and Vysarpadi, Mr Subramanian said.

According to sources, PWD and CC will study parameters like rainfall recorded over the last four decades, intensity and the downpour frequency and the capacity of the existing drains.

The banks of all the water channels in the city would be strengthened and the 15 lakes in the city desilted and fenced.

While, the corporation will focus on construction of storm water drains and improving the minor canals maintained by it. The PWD will focus on three major waterways including Adyar River, Buckingham canal and Cooum. These waterways will be desilted, deepened and their bunds strengthened to carry the flood.

Chennai city has a road network of 2, 870 km, most of it maintained by the corporation. Only about 850 km of roads have storm water drains.

This network of drains with the 16 minor canals, Cooum, Buckingham canal and the Adyar river form the rainwater drainage. Some of the existing drainage system is more than three decades old and during heavy rains, water stagnates in several parts inundating the low lying areas of north and south Chennai. Source : Deccan
